About Shepard Fairey
In 1989, Shepard Fairey was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design where he created the now-infamous The Giant Has A Posse sticker depicting an absurd image of an unrecognizable professional wrestler. The image evolved into an underground icon, as stickers were circulated in large volumes around the globe. By the mid-90's, about a half-million of the little squares were sticking up around the world. Shepard now works as a creative partner for Black Market, a Los Angeles design firm. While creating designs for clients like Pepsi and Universal Pictures, he still creates Obey art, exhibits worldwide in galleries, and, of course, keeps his Obey images posted on public streets. About Andrew Jeffrey Wright
Andrew Jeffrey Wright is a current and founding member of Philadelphia's Space 1026 art commune. He has a bfa in Animation. The collaborative animation "the manipulators", which he made with Clare E. Rojas, has won the top prize for animation at the New York Underground Film Festival and the New York Comedy Film Festival. Wright's highly limited edition handmade books have gained an international following. He has shown at Lizabeth Oliveria (LA), New Image Art (LA), Spector (Philadelphia), The Luggage Store (San Francisco), Lump (Raliegh), The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia), ICA (Philadelphia), Giant Robot NY (NYC) The Corcoran (DC) and Foundation Cartier (Paris). About skullphone
His infamous black-and-white posters of a skull holding a cell phone have been spotted alongside freeways and city walls all over the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas for years now, mystifying spectators with his tongue-in-cheek style of promoting change. [www.larecord.com]

Yesterday, Long Beach hosted the 2nd Saturday Art Walk, a monthly event that has taken place in the heart of the East Village Arts District in Downtown Long Beach for the past nine years. The event offers, art openings, fine dining, live entertainment, and shopping all within walking distance. Some of the more notable events included, the Paul Dragomir Gallery, which was celebrating its one-year anniversary. On display were Paul Dragomir’s delicate renderings of plants, insects, and tranquil landscapes, with color and arrangement that invites a dreamlike narrative to emerge. Originally from Romania, Paul has been living and working in Long Beach for the past ten years and invites you to make an appointment to visit him at his studio/art gallery.

Also noteworthy, were the Supa Lowery Bros. who performed just in front of the Hooray for Humans office, on Linden Ave., showing off their unique brand of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and R&B. Originally from Phillidephia, and now residing in the Los Angeles area, members Chris Lowery, Wes Lowery, Kwame Hall, and Aaron Bumpus have just released a new CD titled, Supa Lowery Bros. Vol. 2. We were able to record much of their live performance, which included songs from the new album: Download MP3

This month's event was cut a little short due to high winds and scattered showers late in the evening, making it hard for some of the booths to operate but, as always, the 2nd Saturday Art Walk drew large crowds of people eager to experience the diverse culture offered by Long Beach, California. Make sure to check out this event when it returns next month, and support your local art scene!

We recently chatted with Antoine Wilson, co-editor of the Literary Quarterly, Public Space. Antoine detailed the many challenges, rewards, and oddities of running a publication, and he also provided some great advice for young writers looking to publish their work. The Public Space show will be followed shortly after by our interview of Graham Reynolds and his band, The Golden Arm Trio. Graham most recently scored the movie, A Scanner Darkly (starring Keanu Reeves), and is currently performing songs from the movie while on tour. We were lucky enough to catch Graham and the Golden Arm Trio at their recent show at Open Bookstore in Long Beach, CA. The show was an amazing display of the Trios musicianship, and we look forward to sampling some of their songs on our upcoming podcast. Apart from these two shows, we'll soon be releasing a series of podcasts focused on fine art, telepathy, and Ben Kweller. More info on those shows will be up shortly.

SoundWalk 2006 was a success. Friday included sound performances by musicians using both traditional instruments to more obscure devices, textured by inventive digital sound spaces. Alessandro Bosetti, Noah Thomas, and Metal Rouge together created a unique and memorable experience. On Saturday we toured the outdoor installations lining Linden, 1st Street, and Elm. A variety of sounds filled the area: the cracking of egg shells in front of The Garden of Pan, a militaristic news commentary in front of Open Bookstore, and many others. The high turnout added to the event’s atmosphere; people croweded around crackling guitar amps and mixing boards, conversation and laughter mixed with installation sounds, creating a blend of art and audience. For all those who missed Friday and Saturday, we highly recommend checking out the post-event performances this Monday (Jazzkammer, Carlos Giffoni and David Rothbaum) and Wednesday (Barbez, Hans Fjellestad, and Mikkel Meyer).
